Its true what they say about songs, sometimes they are another melody but sadness has a way of making us listen carefully to the Lyrics and get overwhelmed.
The song “Cinderella” was written by Steven Curtis Chapman one night after helping his two youngest daughters – Stevey Joy and Maria Sue – to take a bath and after putting them to sleep.Several months later, in May 2008, Chapman’s youngest daughter, Maria Sue(5 years), died as a result of an accident in the Chapman’s driveway(when his oldest son, Caleb, accidentally ran her over in their drive way), and the song took on a whole new meaning for the Chapman family. While the song had originally been written as a message to love and cherish parenthood while it lasted, it acquired another message of the frailty of life and how suddenly it can change. After his daughter’s tragic death, Chapman had said he was “pretty sure [he] would never sing the song again”. Chapman felt that he needed to believe in the hope he proclaims in his songs, and bring that hope to others by singing the song.
To some of us who have lost young loved ones in a tragic way, we identify with the song, the broken dreams, the fact that Cinderella wont actually dance at the ball, the clock definitely struck midnight and she was gone.
On the evening of Friday the 13th, February,2015 I received a call that changed my day. My five year old had niece died at school. While playing by the swing, she fell off and hit her head on a metal and breathless she lay. I read the death certificate and it stated”trauma to the skull occasioned by a blunt object” Right away my lawyer self ran to negligence. According to the law of tort, Negligence has three elements; duty of care, breach of the duty of care resulting to injury. The duty is higher in dealing with children.
Whereas I am not superstitious, I am inclined to believe that Friday the 13th is a bad day.My brother probably knew how rigged the system is and didn’t pursue the matter,he reminded me of the line in Kenny Rogers’s song, The Gambler,Son you don’t have to fight to be a man.
And the clock struck on Friday the 13th and she was gone. There is nothing heavier than a child’s coffin because you are carrying the whole future and burying it. There is something ironic about the undertakers, they do their job with so much gusto ensuring that the buried does not return. The saddest kind of sad is the sad that bites it’s lip and says that I am okay, sadness can only be disguised but it can’t be hidden. The song, Cinderella evokes sad memories and I had to write about it.
