We rushed to August and reviewed songs and we are still here or the calendar says so, you must have listened to this classic song. It’s 2021 and this song does things to my ears.Anyone who has loved/been loved will understand this song.
When people listen to this song they think its originally by Micheal Bolton or Esther Phillips, (Kenny Rogers has also recorded it) But far from the truth, the great Percy Sledge sang the song. “When a Man Loves a Woman” was released 55 years ago. Credited to songwriters Andrew Wright and Calvin Lewis. Released on April 16, 1966, the song hit No. 1 and nearly 50 years later its emotion is just as powerful. A baby boomer classic, “When a Man Loves a Woman” was further embedded in American culture through its use in the 1983 film “The Big Chill.” This is a sweet ballad about a devotion bordering on obsession, the song features Sledge embodying a soul who’s desperate, lost and so bent pleasing his woman that he’s willing to turn his back on his friends, spend all his money on her, “give up all his comforts and sleep out in the rain.” As he sings, Sledge phrases the lines with both passion and futility, embodying those emotions with every syllable. Percy Sledge is a legend.
Love is a drug and one needs a bit of it to become an addict. One can say that R.Kelly sang the opposite in, When a woman loves. The two songs are a true definition of love. Unless you are a son/daughter of a gun who has never experienced what love is, this song is not for you.
Anything about love, count me in!
